June and July meetings – Styling and pottery workshops

A good number of people attended June’s meeting, including some new members. Many trees were brought in to be worked on and to get some advice on pruning / styling. Thanks to Neil and Brian for their advice and assistance.

Daniel Butler ran a bonsai pottery workshop in July. This included information on the use of tools and techniques to carve and decorate a pre-made pot ,as well as creating an individual pot of our own choice. Using a template to form the base and then using the coil building technique to form the walls of the pot, which were then blended together. Also of importance was to score both sides of any joins and to use slip on these joins to prevent air pockets from causing the pot to explode in the kiln. A good selection of pot designs and styles were created. Many thanks to Daniel for his excellent demonstration. We look forward to seeing the glazed and fired pots in the coming months.

  1. Having recently joined Exeter Bonsai Society, I would like to thank all members for the warm welcome received. Everyone is so helpful! The July meeting was very interesting and thanks to Dan for coming down from Swansea to give us such a great demonstration. I look forward to seeing my attempts once they have been fired and glazed.
