Bonsai by the Sea 2023 – show report

We took over the Pavilion on Exmouth seafront once more, and had a steady influx of paying public all day. The numbers weren’t quite up to last years figures, with just over 130 people visiting.

The displays by all the visiting clubs and societies were of a really good standard, with a good number of people commenting on the quality of the trees. There were talks and demonstrations going for most of the day, as well as a walk-around by Chris Thomas, where he discusses the exhibits on an individual basis. Never unkind, his comments and observations are greatly valued by the owners of the trees as well as the gathering who follow to listen to his words of wisdom. In addition to the walk-around, he also gave us a half-hour talk on tree styling. Mark Moreland did us proud with a fascinating discussion before lunch, on propagation, followed by another talk later on the aftercare; and Dan Butler finished off the demos by showing us some of his methods of making pots.

Our thanks go to all those who gave up their Sunday to make this event a success again.
