September 2019 – Neil Hutchings on Japanese Black Pines

Japanese Black Pine is considered one of the classics of bonsai and is suitable for most styles. Neil brought with him various examples of these in bonsai cultivation and talked us through the techniques required for their care. From propagation through development of raw material onto refinement techniques and styling it was a great introduction to the species for those new to the species. Neil also demonstrated the repotting process for these pines to the group whilst fielding questions from the members. Thanks again to Neil for sharing his knowledge and time with us. Neil’s nursery, Devon Bonsai can be found here. Also featured this month were the results of or pottery workshop from the previous meeting, kindly fired and returned by Brian. All of the pieces survived firing, some could even be considered good, certainly for first attempts! The results can be seen in the photos.
