The meeting in June was the first at our new venue in Whitestone. The large spacious hall which has ample parking right outside was brilliant. There was very positive feedback from all of our members.
An excellent variety of tree species were brought along for styling advice, including a large flowering tree native to New Zealand called a Hoheria, which is not commonly seen as bonsai in the UK (also known as lacebark or ribbonwood). This tree was over 5 feet tall! After some discussion it was decided to reduce some of the branches in order to bring the tree to a more suitable size. This followed observation of its response to previous pruning by the owner. Hopefully the tree will respond by sending out many inner buds which in time can be used to build out a much more compact tree. Other trees of note included a wonderful old Oak tree with very naturalistic styling, several different cultivars of Japanese maple, as well as Mugo Pine, Hawthorns and Hemlock. Many thanks to Neil for getting through all the trees and providing his valuable advice. Also thanks to Jock for welcoming us to our new venue.
